Support Alcohol Awareness Month This April

Silver Ridge

Every April, Alcohol Awareness Month puts the spotlight on this important health care issue in America. Since its creation in 1987 by the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (NCADD), April has been dedicated to destigmatizing this terrible disease, so that those who suffer from it are able to seek the help they need without fear or shame. Alcohol addiction claims about 88,000 lives every year and ranks as the third biggest preventable cause of death in the country. We must all do what we can to educate society on this matter and encourage those who suffer from this disease to get treatment for it.

What You Can Do

What can you do to partake in Alcohol Awareness Month? You can help spread information about the misuse of alcohol. Consider distributing a newsletter or pamphlets, or host an event or fundraiser to donate funds to a non-profit treatment center. If you have someone in your life whom you believe might be struggling with alcohol addiction, try to encourage them to speak to an addiction professional.

Here are some of the signs of alcohol addiction:

  • Short-term memory loss or blackouts
  • Severe mood swings and irritability
  • Drinking to cope with stress
  • Drinking instead of fulfilling obligations
  • Isolating from family and friends
  • Drinking in secret
  • Feeling hungover whenever not consuming alcohol

Additionally, if a person begins missing daily activities, including work or hobbies because he or she is hung over, this is an indication that a big problem is brewing. In some cases, one might not even be aware of the problem, which is why it is crucial for friends and family to raise the issue and suggest help.

Who is Affected by Alcohol Addiction?

Anyone can be affected by this disease, regardless of age or background. However, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), it is particularly an issue among adults between the ages of 20 and 64. In fact, it is estimated that 1 in 10 adults in that age range dies from excessive drinking.

This month’s outreach might not be enough to reach everyone, but it brings the issue to the forefront and helps facilitate helpful discourse.
