Observed every July 24, International Self-Care Day serves as a powerful reminder that prioritizing your well-being isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity. For those navigating mental health challenges or recovering from substance use, self-care is more than a trending buzzword. It’s a lifeline.

What Is Self-Care, Really? 

Self-care is often misunderstood as indulgence—bubble baths, spa days or treating yourself. And while those things can be soothing, true self-care goes deeper.

Why July 24? 

International Self-Care Day is held on 7/24 to symbolize that the benefits of self-care are felt 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It’s a reminder that caring for yourself isn’t a one-time act—it’s a continuous, everyday commitment. 

Why Self-Care Is Vital in Recovery

  • 10 minutes of mindful breathing

  • Reaching out to a trusted friend or sponsor 
  • Unplugging from social media 
  • Journaling your feelings without judgment 
  • Saying “no” when your plate is full 
  • Taking a nature walk or resting without guilt
